Anna Lea MerrittEnglish painter, muralist, printmaker, illustrator, and writer, 1844–1930

Anna Lea Merritt was born in Philadelphia, but spent most of her working life in England. Her work is most often situated within the British, late-Victorian milieu. She was largely self-trained, but studied Anatomy at the Women's medical College of Pennsylvania. In 1870, while living in London, she met, trained with, and later married Henry Merritt, a painter and picture restorer. She exhibited in the United Kingdom at the Royal Academy, in Paris at the Salon, and at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine arts. She was a member of the Royal Society of Painters and Etchers.
