Scottish illustrator, painter, and designer, 1875–1949
BiographyJessie Marion King was a Scottish illustrator known for her illustration of children's books. She was born in Dunbartonshire near Glasgow and was given a strick religious education that initially discouraged her artistic talents. King was trained as an art teacher at the Queen Margaret College and later as an artist at the Glasgow School of Art. In 1899 King was made Tutor in Book Decoration and Design at the Glasgow School of Art and continued to teach there until her marraige to E.A. Taylor. The majority of King's work consisted of illustration and book cover design, but she was also an accomplished jewelery artist. She was influenced by Art Nouveau and the Glasgow Four, and is considered one of the Glasgow Girls. In 1910 King and her husband moved to Paris and opened the Sheiling Atelier School. Work created by King during the Paris years is considered influencial to the birth of the Art Deco movement.
