Arthur Quartley

American artist, 1839–1886
BiographyAmerican marine painter Arthur Quartley was born in Paris. His family moved to the United States when he was 12 years old and settled in Baltimore, Maryland. Quartley studied drawing with his father Frederick William Quartley, an engraver, before being apprenticed to a sign painter. In the 1860s his family opened a design firm, Emmart & Quartley in Baltimore, but Quartley was spending more and more time painting seascapes. In 1875 he moved to New York to pursue painting. In New York he was quickly found himself at the center of the art world; he was elected to the National Academy in 1876 and helped found the Tile Club the following year.
