Paul Starrett Sample

American landscape painter and muralist, 1896–1974
BiographyBorn in Louisville, Kentucky, and raised in the Midwest, Sample graduated from Dartmouth after service in World War I. In the 1920s he moved to California where he studied art at the Otis Art Institute with Jonas Lie. He joined the faculty at the University of Southern California. He was painting in a style influenced by Regionalism. Sample returned to New England in 1938, becoming an artist-in-residence at Dartmouth where he remained for the rest of his career.
