Max Rosenthal

American engraver and lithographer, 1833–1918
BiographyRosenthal studied lithography, drawing, and painting in Paris before coming to Philadelphia in 1849, where he produced some of the nation's most ambitious chromolithographs to date. He chronicled the Civil War and became a pillar of the Philadelphia artistic community, joining the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and helping found the Philadelphia Sketch Club. His son Albert Rosenthal was also an artist.
