Doris Rosenthal

Born in Riverside, California, Rosenthal was educated at the Los Angeles State Teachers College and Columbia University in New York. She attended the Art Students League where she studied with John Sloan and George Bellows. She worked briefly as a commercial textile designer, earning money to travel to Europe for further study. She returned to New York, taught at Columbia Teachers College and exhibited her work around the city. Her first solo show was at Morton Galleries in 1928. By the early 1930s she was traveling to Mexico (on Guggenheim Fellowships in 1931 and 1936) and painting Mexican themes, and she eventually made her home in Oaxaca.
