Harry Gottlieb

American painter and printmaker, 1895–1992
BiographyBorn in Bucharest, Gottlieb came to the United States in 1907 and his family settled in Minneapolis, where he attended the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. He worked as an illustrator for the U.S. Navy and then moved to New York City, where he found work as a set and costume designer for the Provincetown Players in Greenwich Village. He continued his studies at the National Academy of Design and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. In the 1930s, Gottlieb joined the Federal Art Project as a printmaker, and produced many prints of urban life.
