Dean Cornwell

American painter, illustrator, and muralist, 1892–1960
BiographyCornwell began his illustration career in his native Louisville, KY, as a newspaper cartoonist, and then studied art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. After moving to New York, he studied there at the Art Students League and the Leonia (NJ) School of Illustration with Pyle student Harvey Dunn. In 1918, he won an exclusive contract with Cosmopolitan magazine. In the 1920s, he taught at Pratt Institue in Brooklyn and extended his work to include a variety of magazines and books.
