Louis Breslow

American printmaker, 1908–2011

BiographyLouis Breslow, also known as Lou Barlow, worked for the Graphics division of the New York City WPA until 1934 and with the Federal Arts Project where he was employed from 1935-41. During WWII Breslow was employed as a medical illustrator for the United States Army – a trade he continued with after completing his military service. Breslow pursued his keen interest in art studying both in Europe and at the National Academy of Design in New York.

Louis Breslow changed his name to Lou Barlow in 1951. Barlow was elected to the National Academy in recognition of his long and distinguished professional career. He belonged to the American Watercolor Society and the Philadelphia Print Club. Barlow has work in the collections of many noted museums including Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; the Brooklyn Museum, NY; the Smithsonian Museum, DC; Art Institute of Chicago, Il; Philadelphia Museum of Art, PA.
