Stanley Meltzoff

American painter and illustrator, 1917–2006
BiographyA painter best known for grand science fiction illustrations and wild-life paintings, Meltzoff was born in New York City and graduated from City College before becoming an instructor at Pratt Institute. He served in Italy during World War II as an artist and writer for the military magazine Stars and Stripes. After the war he built a career designing advertisements, book covers, and spreads for magazine stories. In the early 1960s, he began to develop a specialty in painting saltwater game fish and other marine subjects. His marine-life paintings were featured in magazines including Sports Illustrated and Field and Stream.
