Allan Rohan Crite

American illustrator and painter, 1910–2007
BiographyBoston artist Allan Rohan Crite trained at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. He received early notice for his paintings of everyday life in Boston's African American neighborhoods. He was employed as an illustrator for the Planning Department of the Boston Naval Shipyards. A devout Episcopalian, he began incorporating religious themes into his paintings and publishing books of illustrated spirituals in the late 1930s. He also lectured on liturgical art and wrote and illustrated religious books.
