Label TextBorn in Toronto, Edward John "Jay" Hambidge was working at the New York Herald and attending the Arts Studens League between 1893 and 1897. His illustrations appeared in books and many major magazines, including Scribner's, McClure's, and St. Nicholas.

His interest in Dynamic Symmetry - a design concept based on the symmetry of growth in hmans and plants known as the Golden Ratio - led him to teach the applications of the principle to art.
