Label TextLisa Stillman was the step-daughter of the pre-Raphaelite painter Marie Spartali Stillman (1865-1946). Like her father, William James Stillman, and step-mother, she chose a career as an artist, enrolling first at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. She was also being tutored by George Frederic Watts, an early friend to Marie. When the family moved to Rome, Lisa continued her studies with the painter Ernest Hébert at the French Academy and befriended Giovanni Costa, the leader of a group of Italian and British landscape painters who have since come to be known as the Etruscans. Charles Fairfax Murray was a close friend to the Stillman family and knew Lisa from her childhood.
