Label TextThis drawing bears the stamp of The Goldwyn Pictures Corporation Art Department. From 1917 to 1923, Everett Shinn worked as art director for Metro Goldwyn Mayer and other Hollywood studios. Described on its advertising poster as "a tremendous photo-spectacle," the silent film Polly of the Circus centered on a minister who falls in love with a circus performer. A prominent New York-based painter of the early 20th century, Shinn often focused on urban themes. He was also a cartoonist and illustrator, creating works for twenty-eight books and ninety-four magazine stories, as well as a mural artist.
