Label TextBorn and trained in Russia, Nicolas Remisoff arrived in New York in 1922, where he specialized largely in illustrations with musical and theatrical themes. This cover features suggestions of both, with its curtain-like frame and costumed characters set against the city skyline. The image reflects the magazine's stylish sophistication. Founded in 1913, Vanity Fair was the first magazine of Condé Montrose Nast's journalism empire. Featuring an urbane mix of fiction, satire, criticism, and photography, it was folded into Vogue in 1936, a victim of the Depression's declining advertising revenues. Condé Nast Publications revived the magazine in 1983.
