Label TextClifford Ashley grew up New Bedford, Massachusetts, the center of the American whaling industry, and retained his interested in nautical history. He created this scene of the famous 1841 whaleship C. W. Morgan in 1916, and then included it in his book Yankee Whaler (1926), which is still read today as a definitive study of whaling methods, ship construction and outfitting, and crews' daily routines.
