Label TextElizabeth, or “Nelly,” Houghton was an illustrator of children’s books, very much in the style of her cousin, Walter Crane. She was also a distant cousin of Samuel Bancroft. Houghton studied at the Warrington School of Art, located in Cheshire, an important regional school for artists during the Victorian period. She was also a needle worker, exhibiting embroidery in Manchester in 1899 and 1904. This self-portrait was a commission from Bancroft.
