Label TextThis scene depicts the remorse of the Old Testament warrior, Jephthah, after having unintentionally agreed to the sacrifice of his daughter. The biblical episode was popularized during the Victorian period in a poem by Alfred Tennyson entitled “A Dream of Fair Women.” Siddal’s work reflects the tentative hand of a budding artist whose artistic maturity was curtailed by her early death.
