Label TextThis portrait of Samuel Bancroft, who formed the core of the Museum’s Pre-Raphaelite collection between 1890 and 1915, was begun in 1896 by his cousin, the California artist, J.H.E. Partington. It was left unfinished at the artist’s death, when his son, Richard, completed it. Bancroft felt it made him look older than he was and was unhappy with what he described as the “too aristocratic hands.” The hands were later re-painted by J. D. Chalfant of Wilmington.
