Label TextEdward Calvert was part of a group of artists associated with William Blake in the 1820s. They called themselves "The Ancients," a reference to their nostalgia for the past. They focused on landscape, but the views were often overlaid with biblical or visionary allusions, strengthened by accompanying text. The Bride depicted in classical pose at center of this print, and the "stray lamb" by her side suggests a Christian allegory. Calvert's interpretation of the landscape is derived from direct observation, but this data is then synthesized into a composition of intricate abstract patterning. (msf)
