Label TextAt first glance, this appears to be a scene from daily experience—two friends greeting. However, the figure on the left has what resembles an angel’s wing. This may be the Christian story of the Annunciation, when the angel Gabriel brings tidings to the Virgin Mary of her future son. This print is based on a 1964 collage from Bearden’s series Prevalence of Ritual. For the artist, ritual relates to the conditions of everyday life, from joy to torment, and he focuses on the Black experience in the United States. His collages depict busy city streets, family gatherings, and folklore.
