Label TextThe Gate of Memory represents an early version of the story Rossetti presented in Found, in which a country girl goes to a city and, unable to find work, turns by necessity to a life of prostitution. Rossetti depicts the woman watching longingly as young children play in the street. She is perhaps remembering earlier, happier times in her own youth.
