Label TextHistorically, the drawbridge referred to a movable bridge that extended over a castle moat and could be raised in defense of the structure. Over time, this same mechanism was used for bridges that spanned rivers. The center of the bridge would be raised or lowered to allow for the passage of ships close to the city.
