Label TextThis painting shows the lane leading to the home Barbara Bodichon built in Sussex in 1863. The dwelling became a place of respite from her busy life of campaigning for women’s rights in London. At “Scalands Gate,” she entertained her large circle of friends including artists Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Elizabeth Siddal, and the novelist George Eliot.
