Label TextBorn and raised in Greensboro, North Carolina, Johnson moved to New York with his family as a young man. He lived in Harlem and studied art at the National Academy of Design. By the mid-1920s he was exhibiting his paintings with the Society of Independent Artists and the Harmon Foundation, where he won prestigious prizes. Johnson died at age 38 and his works are quite rare. The Museum was delighted to acquire this work which represents his early style, influenced by the Ashcan School and French Impressionism.
