Label TextA British painter and etcher, Joseph Gray was educated in South Shields, a coastal town south of Newcastle on the east coast of England. During the First World War, Gray served first in the Black Watch and then became a war artist for The Graphic. The majority of his work features architectural or landscape views. Gray boldly apportions large portions of the picture field to empty space, emphasizing the vast un-peopled geography of Perth and Kinross, Scotland. (msf)
