Label TextThe subject of this painting is Pauline Bancroft Chadwick, the artist's wife. Her father was John Bancroft, who became president of Joseph Bancroft and Sons after the death in 1915 of his cousin, Samuel Bancroft, the Wilmington industrialist whose Pre-Raphaelite collection is now owned by the Museum. Pauline was also related to Howard Pyle, who gave her a painting, now in the Museum's collection, as a wedding gift.
