Label TextThe subject of this painting is taken from the Vita Nuova written by the early Renaissance poet Dante Alighieri (1265–1321). Stillman captures the moment in the text when Dante, who is mourning the death of Beatrice, his true love, looks out from his window onto the city of Florence and acknowledges a group of pilgrims passing in the street below.
