Label TextSt. George, the patron saint of England, has a rich history in British visual arts. For members of the Pre-Raphaelite circle, including Marie Spartali Stillman, the subject offered the opportunity of depicting a figure from the Middle Ages, the period which they found so inspirational. Stillman was a student of Ford Madox Brown, an older artist who was a teacher and mentor to many of the Pre-Raphaelites.
