Label Text1941 marked the 25th anniversary of the Society of Independent Artists. On April 7 the organization's president, John Sloan, was honored with a dinner at Petitpas Restaurant, in celebration of the group's Silver Jubilee Exhibition. There were 240 people in attendance, and the guests received a portrait (probably a lithograph) by Freeman of the guest of honor. This sketch and several others in the Museum collection seem to relate to that portrait, which also appeared in Don Freeman's Newsstand that spring.
