Label TextThomas Worth began his career as a free-lance illustrator, supplying drawings for Currier and Ives, a New York firm that produced lithographs, often of domestic, humorous, and patriotic scenes, and reproductions of works of art, especially political satire. He then moved to Harper and Brothers; his work appeared in their publications for decades. He adapted readily to color, producing numerous magazines covers in color. Worth's series "Darktown" for Currier and Ives was very popular; it was the overtly racist type of depiction of African Americans that viewers of the time found amusing.
