Label TextOakley used a grid system to expand smaller preparatory sketches into full-scale studies, called “cartoons.” These full-size sheets, such as the red chalk drawing of the Archangel Michael (at left), were used to transfer the design onto the wood panels of the altarpiece. Because the paint was applied very thinly, with the passage of time, one can often see the corresponding red grid lines beneath the surface of the final version, as in the case of The Angel of Victory triptych. (These preparatory grid marks would not have been visible at the time the painting was completed).
