Label TextKatharine Richardson Wireman grew up in Philadelphia in the late 1800s and studied with Howard Pyle from 1897 to 1900. She was one of a group of women illustrators who gained national reputations for their work at this time. She had a naturalistic style and great ability as a visual storyteller. Her gift of summoning up a convincing story in a single scene such as this one allowed her to present a range of subjects with telling detail and nuance of expression and gesture. In her work, viewers could discover and explore the uncontrived rhythms and relationships of their own lives.Katharine Richardson Wireman
