Label TextOne of more than twenty covers by Katharine Richardson Wireman for The Country Gentleman, this illustration depicts a Boy Scout who has jumped to attention upon hearing "The Star-Spangled Banner."

His satchel and belt buckle feature the Scouts' logo of the fleur-de-lis. The boy seems to be following the Scouts' encouragement to take an active role in amateur radio. Building radio receivers and transmitting Morse code were regular Scout activities, put to use in World War I, when the Secretary of the Navy praised these “chivalric young crusaders” for their expertise in helping to locate illegal amateur radio operators.
