Label TextKatharine Richardson Wireman grew up in Philadelphia in the late 1800s and studied with Howard Pyle from 1897 to 1900. She was one of a group of women illustrators who gained national reputations for their work at this time. She had a naturalistic style and great ability as a visual storyteller. Her gift of summoning up a convincing story in a single scene such as this one allowed her to present a range of subjects with telling detail and nuance of expression and gesture. In her work, viewers could discover and explore the uncontrived rhythms and relationships of their own lives.
