Label TextAmerican realist painter Thomas Eakins (1844–1916) was an artist with whom Baskin felt an intense personal connection. This portrait is based on a photograph of Eakins taken when he was 28 years old. Baskin has emphasized the wrinkles around his eyes, making him appear older. In his own portraits, Eakins aged his sitters.
