Label TextAs the original “fallen woman,” Mary Magdalene was featured in numerous Pre-Raphaelite images. They were no doubt drawn to her checkered history and ultimate redemption. The jar of ointment is the only detail which suggests the subject as Mary Magdalene. The richness of the brocade on the wall and the finely embroidered cloak worn by the sitter are a testament to Sandys’ exceptional talent and his commitment to the Pre-Raphaelite delight in detail.
