Label TextIn this letter to William and Mary Phelps just after Christmas of 1951, Wyeth writes about his son:

Jamie just came in the studio after being out on the hill sledding. He looked so perfect in your coon hat that I had to make this sketch for you. What a wonderful gift. Nothing could please him more...

Wyeth's painting Faraway (1952; Collection of Jamie Wyeth) with Jamie in almost identical hat and pose, reveals how a spontaneous, intimate sketch became a study for a later painting.
