Label TextInspired by commercial road signs, stencils, and trademarks, Robert Indiana first came to prominence in the 1960s as the Pop Art movement emerged. His vividly colored symmetrical compositions, which include letters, words, and numbers, are painted in an abstract, hard edge style.

This work is one in a series of ten painted in 1971. Intended to be autobiographical, each work commemorates a year in the decade of the 1960s. The “4” represents 1964, and “COENTIES SLIP” identifies the location of the artist’s studio in Manhattan that year.
