Ruth Egri

American painter, 1911–1996

BiographyRuth Egri was born in the Lower East Side of Manhattan in 1911 and began painting in the 1930s. She is known for her adherence to the style and techniques of Dynamic Symmetry, a proportioning system and natural design methodology. There is a thread of social consciousness—sometimes satirical, sometimes poignant—throughout her work, and her later works often depict women and delve into the emotional drama of women's lives. Egri received a mural commission from the Works Progress Administration for the Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx and taught mural painting along with illustrating children's books. In the late 1940s, Egri moved to Wilmington with her husband, Frank Holden, and she continued to teach and exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Her work is included in numerous museum and private collections.
