American painter and engraver, 1890–1979
BiographyWinkler was a master etcher best known for his depictions of San Francisco, California. He also recorded visits to France and London in his prints. His beautiful etchings, drawn directly on copper plates, reflect the influence of the expatriate painter and etcher James Abbott McNeill Whistler.
