Abraham P. Hankins

American painter, 1904–1963
BiographyHankins was an American modernist painter based in Philadelphia. Born in Gomel, Russia, Hankins came to the United States in 1914. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts with Henry McCarter and at the Philadelphia Museum School of Art. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during World War I. After the war, he traveled to Paris where he studied at the Académie Julian. Eventually he returned to Philadelphia, resuming study at the Academy and the Museum School, and attending the Barnes Foundation. Works by Hankins are in the Barnes Foundation and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and his papers are at the Archives of American Art.
