BiographyWilliam Thomas Smedley was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania to a Quaker family. He studied as an engraver at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and in Paris under Jean-Paul Laurens. Smedley is primarily known as an illustrator of scenes of modern life for books and magazines, but he also worked as a watercolorist and a portrait painter.
