Walter Shirlaw

American painter, illustrator, 1838–1909
BiographyBorn in Paisley, Scotland, Shirlaw moved to the United States with his family in 1840. He gained early success as an artist, exhibiting in New York and Chicago in the 1860s. He studied in Munich in the 1870s and exhibited in Paris. His paintings included landscapes and genre scenes, and he was a successful illustrator and engraved bank notes. An ambitious artist with European training, Shirlaw was a founder of the Society of American Artists and taught at the Art Students League of New York. He was elected to the National Academy of Design and the Salmagundi Club in the 1880s.
