Label TextThe names of the title refer to the three White girls on the book's cover. The plot revolves around plantation life before the Civil War, told from the White childrens' point of view. The book romanticizes plantation life and is filled with racist humor and negative stereotypes about pre-Emancipation enslaved people. Notice the African American servant depicted holding the youngest girl balanced on the fence. The book's author was born on a plantation in Alabama in 1850.
