Label TextWhen Will Carqueville moved to Paris to continue his art education, J. J. Gould, a student from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and a Philadelphia native, took over as the designer of Lippincott's monthly posters. Many contemporary critics considered his work merely derivative of Edward Penfield's; modern commentators, however, have favored Gould's sense of movement and nuanced colors.
