Label TextThe model for this canvas was a professional artist's model named Amelia Rose. Sloan took the title from the male part sung by a woman in Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro. This striking portrait was purchased by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney within a year of its completion, and it became part of the Whitney Museum Collection. However, it was traded back to Sloan for his portrait of the Greenwich Village restauranteur Romany Marie in 1951.
