Label TextGeorge Frederic Watts encouraged Val Prinsep to become an artist and gave him entrée into the Pre-Raphaelite circle. Prinsep, the son of one of Watts’ wealthy patrons, the Thoby Prinseps, trained in Paris and spent additional time studying in Italy. His mature work, which is classical in style and shows an interest in the High Renaissance, is reflective of the Aesthetic Movement. The subject and purpose of this drawing, which came from the artist’s estate, are unknown.
