Label TextSteinlen was the primary illustrator for Gil Blas Illustré, producing hundreds of covers for the magazine from 1891 through 1900. Steinlen's cover designs, which illustrate a stories or songs from the issues, generally depict scenes of daily life on the streets and inside the theaters, cafés, and apartments of Paris. This illustration for "Les Annonciateurs"—annonciateur translates to warning or omen—is highly unusual.
