Label TextSteinlen was the primary artist for the French magazine Gil Blas Illustré, designing many of the magazine's covers between 1891 and 1900. His covers, which often illustrated stories within, frequently presented scenes of everyday life in and around Paris. American artists, including John Sloan who owned this copy, collected and studied Steinlen's published illustrations. In the mid-1890s, Sloan and his friends launched a short-lived magazine, also called Gil Blas, in Philadelphia.
